Good Morning America was in Key West!
Did you catch Good Morning America on July 21st? I did and I was really excited because there was a great segment on Key West.
Sam Champion, the weather personality from the show was broadcasting live from the Conch Tour Train. Since I recently took this tour, it was fun to see them pass some of the stops I had seen like Ernest Hemingway’s House and the Mel Fisher Museum. At the Fisher Maritime Museum, they showed some of the stunning pieces that Mel Fisher and his crew recovered from the shipwreck of the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha in 1622. If you’ve never been to this museum, you should check it out, Mel Fisher’s story and his amazing tenacity are apparent as you learn all about his 17 year quest and view magnificent pieces of eight, a huge emerald, silver bars, gold coins and tons of antiquated navigational equipment.
Also on the segment was a piece on the Sunset Celebration in Mallory Square. They showed the street performers juggling with fire and crowds of people partying, listening to music and watching the sunset in awe. The last time I was in Key West, that was one of my most enjoyable moments. Besides the delicious conch fritters, homemade Key Lime pie and the music, I really had fun meeting so many warm and friendly people. Also, I never realized how spectacular the whole celebration was or how different it is to see the sunset in Key West. It really is an awe-inspiring sight.
At the end of the segment for Good Morning America, Sam Champion was talking with a local Key Lime Pie maker–and discussing how they make Key Lime Pies. The secret of course is in the Key Lime Juice! I’m sure you’ve tried your share of Key Lime Pies in your lifetime, but honestly you haven’t had the best unless you’ve tried it in Key West, it’s the real thing.
Next time you’re in Key West, take an hour and a half (or so) to ride on the Conch Tour Train, it is so much fun and you get to learn lots of fascinating information about the history of our Southernmost City and the colorful people and places that make it so unique.
